Following on from our previous webinars on Hydrogen and Energy Efficiency, we are delighted to invite you to the latest webinar in our series, focusing on Marine Energy in Northern Ireland. Showcasing both our local and Scottish marine energy sectors, we will be taking a look at the potential of ongoing projects in Strangford Lough and the Orkney’s. Our event will discuss how the challenges surrounding marine spatial governance, biodiversity protection, recreation, fishing and boating are limiting the potential of fully harnessing marine energy for a sustainable energy future.

Topic: Get Metal Wet: The Orkney Experience
 

For over a decade at EMEC, Eileen has worked with 30 different wave and tidal technology companies from 10 different countries and engaged with 100s more worldwide. As External Relationship Manager, this breadth of experience directly feeds her role which includes new business development and political lobbying, as EMEC has become a global focal point for the emerging marine renewables industry.
 

Sam McCloskey, FEI CEnv, Director, Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy
Topic: Innovating through the waves & tides: The Research and Development Pathway to progress in NI
 

Sam joined CASE, an industry-led, sustainable energy R&D centre, funded by Invest NI in November 2011, following a 17-year career in consultancy. She calls upon a broad-ranging experience of leading energy sustainability and resource efficiency projects across a number of industry sectors, from local to pan-European projects. She currently sits on the Ireland wide Marine Renewable Industry Association (MRIA) Council. 
 

Dr Carwyn Frost, Lecturer in Civil Engineering, Queen’s University Belfast
Topic: Tidal Turbine Testing

Dr Carwyn Frost is an Early Career Researcher (ECR) and lecturer in Civil Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. Dr Frost is experienced in Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations and experimental validation in the laboratory and field for Ocean Renewable Energy (ORE) technology. Dr Frost aims to support research and enterprise in the ORE community, facilitating field-scale testing and measurement campaigns suitable for validation and appropriate scaling of technologies to support the ORE sector in fulfilling its potential.
 

Dr Karen Mooney, Research Fellow in Biological Sciences, Queen’s University Belfast
Topic: Sustainable Algal Cultivation and Renewable Energy Technologies
 

Dr Karen Mooney is a Research Fellow in Biological Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast. She currently manages the Queen’s University Belfast seaweed cultivation factory (largest in the UK). Her primary research interest is in algal cultivation and toxins. Dr Mooney is researching how to sustainably maximise the cultivation potential of kelp, either alone or in conjunction with other aquaculture or renewable energy technologies. She is also involved with policy awareness and community engagement processes linked to coastal and offshore development.
