Action Renewables have facilitated over 100MW of renewable energy projects in NI since 2008.

contact us

Action Renewables has an extensive history of facilitating and administrating renewable energy projects within the private and public sector. Our experience with regulatory authorities and statutory bodies has proved to be invaluable to our clients when navigating schemes such as the Renewables Obligation and other support mechanisms.

Whether you are considering a new project, looking to improve efficiencies or perhaps seeking investment opportunities, Action Renewables is willing to advise and support. With over 15 years in the renewables industry, we aim to inspire confidence in every aspect of your project.

Repowering

What is it?
Replacing an existing weakening turbine with a larger more efficient machine. Its aim is to maximise the output whilst maintaining the generating stations capacity. This allows operators still restricted under the RO/NIRO scheme ROC banding levels to consider this service also.

Benefits

  • Improve performance of generator, taller hub heights and longer rotor blades enable more wind energy to be captured;
  • Maximise energy output; power output can be enhanced, with possibility of doubling annual production;
  • Increase financial returns; more generation creates more income;
  • Improve reliability; modern components tend to be more dependable and allow for more consistent generation.

We can provide

  • Project feasibility study; site assessment, yield comparison, lifetime assessment;
  • Economic analysis of repowering project;
  • Project support and advice; guidance around repowering and compliance with the RO/NIRO
  • Project management under the RO/NIRO; correspondence and transparency with Ofgem throughout the whole process.
  • Contacts to approved and reliable installers; ensuring a smooth transition from old to new.

With new turbines becoming more available and economically feasible for smaller scale projects it can be highly beneficial to upgrade your turbine.

Research and Feasibility Studies

What is it?
Our technical team here at Action Renewables can provide organisations and individuals with independent feasibility studies which typically include:

  • Site Assessment (if required);
  • Capital requirements and operational costs projections;
  • Analysis of potential uses and/or users of power generated (best use study);
  • Evaluation of generator options and calculation of generator performance for your site;
  • Cost/benefit analysis;
  • Engagement with relevant stakeholders;
  • Assistance with suppliers and installers;
  • Providing counsel and advice on end of life of products and options such as repowering.

How we can help:
Action Renewables appreciates that making any size of investment into a project can be daunting. So we offer the following service to allow you to have a clear understanding of the risks, costs and revenue streams available to yourself; before engaging with suppliers and installers.

Research & Feasibility Studies

With our market knowledge and substantial network which includes trusted installers and experienced clients, we are in an excellent position to help guide and advise you through the decision making process.

We work with technologies including:

  • Wind Turbines
  • Combined heat and power plants
  • Anaerobic Digestion Units
  • Solar PV & Solar Thermal
  • Biomass Boilers

Our studies are not limited to the specific points above and can be tailored to suit the study that you require.

Innovation

Innovation

With schemes such as the Renewables Obligation concluding, coupled with policy restrictions, renewable energy has been described by some as having an uncertain future. At Action Renewables, we recognise this only as an opportunity to encourage innovative projects and remunerate the implementation of further renewable energy generation.

We are currently engaging with key stakeholders to assess opportunities surrounding the production of hydrogen from renewable sources and opportunities within transport for green hydrogen and biogas applications. It is also recognised that energy/battery storage will play an important part in the penetration of renewable energy in the immediate future. Action Renewables will continue to engage with interested parties and facilitate their projects.

We consider all aspects of these innovative projects, including: feasibility, financial modelling, technology requirements, logistics and investor confidence. Importantly, we can advise on impacts associated with receiving existing subsidies, planning and grid connection legislative requirements.

Grace Period

Onshore Wind ≤5MW
The Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation (NIRO) scheme officially closed to new applicants for onshore wind ≤5MW on 30th June 2016. Grace periods were introduced for stations affected by the early closure of the scheme. There are five grace periods in total which applicants can apply for, spanning from 1st July 2016 to 31st March 2019. This enables operators who meet the relevant eligibility criteria to commission and submit an application to Ofgem on or before the relevant date.

Projects have the opportunity to apply under each of the following grace periods;

  • Approved development
  • Grid or radar delay
  • Approved development and Investment freeze
  • Approved development and Grid or radar delay
  • Approved development and Investment freeze and Grid or radar delay

It should be noted that each grace period requires projects to meet strict eligibility criteria as outlined by Ofgem in their guidance document.

Non-onshore wind technologies
The Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation (NIRO) scheme officially closed to new applicants for all non-onshore wind technologies on 31st March 2017.

Grace periods were introduced for stations affected by the closure of the scheme. There are three grace periods in total which applicants can apply for spanning from 1st April 2017 to 31st March 2018. This enables operators who meet the relevant eligibility criteria to commission and submit an application to Ofgem on or before the relevant date.

Grace Period

Projects have the opportunity to apply under each of the following grace periods;

  • Grid or radar delay
  • Preliminary accreditation
  • Enabling financial decisions

It should be noted that each grace period requires projects to meet strict eligibility criteria as outlined by Ofgem in their guidance document.

Why Action Renewables?
We have established successful relationships with Ofgem, the Distribution Network Operator (DNO), installers and project operators to ensure an efficient grace period application process. As a result, we have successfully completed in excess of 70 grace period applications for both onshore wind and non-onshore wind technologies.

AR can help operators collate the necessary documentation, assess their grace period eligibility and advise on the requirements to ensure a more streamlined accreditation process.

Wind Monitoring

To make an informed investment in a wind turbine project, it is advisable to monitor the wind regime at the proposed site. Feeding recorded wind speed figures into energy production calculations will more accurately predict the project's economic and environmental payback.
